Coping with cancer - Dealing with a diagnosis of cancer

It’s common to feel swamped with many different emotions when you are told that you have cancer.

At first the news may be very hard to take in and seem unreal. You may feel numb at first, then shocked, you may also feel that your mood swings from anger to disbelief.

These feelings are normal and to be expected and do not mean that you are not coping; rather this is part of the process you must go through in coming to terms with your illness.

Remember that your family and friends may be also feeling the same way and will also need time to get used to the news. Reactions differ from one person to another and there is no right or wrong way to feel.

The following sections describe some of the feelings and questions that you may have following a diagnosis of cancer.
