Cancer can affect anyone, regardless of age. 1 in 3 people in Northern Ireland will develop cancer at some stage in their lives making this a disease of major significance and touching the lives of us all.
Whilst it is still an often-dreaded disease, there are many ways to prevent and treat cancer. Remember over half the cancers currently treated are now cured.
If there is a history of cancer in your immediate family, you may be at increased risk of developing the disease. However, up to a third of all cancer deaths could be prevented through lifestyle changes.
There are simple lifestyle messages that apply to the whole population that will help to prevent cancers. Simple steps such as eating more fruit, vegetables and cereals, eating less fat and processed foods, cutting back on alcohol, stopping smoking, taking care in the sun and becoming more physically active, will all help to reduce your risk of developing cancer.
This section explores how we can reduce our risk of cancer in more detail.
