Northern Ireland Melanoma Implementation Strategy Group

This group has representation from the statutory, voluntary and private sectors including employers and unions. The group has agreed aims and short, medium and long term goals to promote an awareness of skin cancer (melanoma) and to encourage the promotion of the prevention messages to the Northern Ireland population. Resources have been reviewed and a number of projects initiated.

A Regional Care in the Sun website is currently under construction and leaflets promoting the care in the sun message are also being developed.

The care in the sun message of cover up, wear sunscreen, stay in the shade, wear a hat and sunglasses is important to all especially for the protection of children, young people and outdoor workers.

SAFE is an exciting resource for primary teachers. It has been designed to encourage children aged 7-9 to adopt a healthy lifestyle - one that could help them avoid cancer and many other diseases later in life. SAFE stands for SUN, AIR, FOOD and EXERCISE. Resources include a wall poster, activity sheets and teacher's notes, which are available from the UCF at a cost of £2.50.

Get Sunwise is available for older primary school pupils and includes a teacher's pack, poster, stickers, and comics. This is available at a cost of £8.50.
