The Ulster Cancer Foundation (UCF) today announced its participation in the UICC (International Union Against Cancer) 4th World Conference for Cancer Organisations which will take place in Dublin, Ireland, at the Burlington Hotel, between 17-19 November, 2004. The event, hosting more than 500 international cancer experts spanning a wide spectrum of disciplines, will focus on the means of tackling the global cancer problem, which is seeing a sharp increase worldwide, with presentations given by the foremost experts on the topic of cancer control.
Arlene Spiers, Chief Executive, Ulster Cancer Foundation said, This is a wonderful opportunity for cancer charities to come together from throughout the world and learn from each other. Delegates will be encouraged to share information and knowledge about their own organisations work and promote greater cooperation between cancer specialists on a global platform. Cancer affects all nationalities and it is only by working in partnership with cancer specialists from around the world that we will achieve advances in cancer research, better treatments, and ultimately a cure, for the disease.
Dr. John R. Seffrin, UICC President and Chief Executive Officer of the American Cancer Society added, Cancer is potentially the most preventable and most curable of the major life-threatening diseases facing humankind, and yet there are ten million new cases of the disease globally each year and six million deaths. UICC recognises that researchers, health care professionals, governments, corporations, patients and cancer NGOs each have a role to play in tackling this crisis.
The conference will address the latest developments in cancer prevention and early detection, research and treatment of cancer, strategic cancer control planning, and progress on tobacco control. UCF is proud to be part of this meeting which will feature the world's most prominent health organisations and agencies for cancer control including the World Health Organization, National Cancer Institute, International Agency for Research on Cancer, Cancer Research UK, Cancer Council Australia, Europa Donna, Lance Armstrong Foundation and American Cancer Society.
