The Ulster Cancer Foundation (UCF) wholeheartedly welcomed tonight?s news that MPs have decided to make all workplaces in England smoke-free.
Gerry McElwee, Head of Cancer Prevention at UCF said: ?Many of us have friends and relatives living, working and studying in England. We are delighted that they will now get the same degree of protection from secondhand tobacco smoke as those of us living in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
?Prior to the vote, we had lobbied all our local MPs and we knew from speaking to them, that they were fully supportive of comprehensive smokefree workplaces in England. They should be congratulated on their stance to improve public health.
?Tonight?s Health Bill vote is a major breakthrough in cancer prevention. It will bring significant public health benefits to present and future generations.
?Those to benefit most from tonight?s announcement are employees within the hospitality sector ? who are the most heavily exposed workers at present but it will also protect customers, smokers and non-smokers alike.?
