The Ulster Cancer Foundation (UCF) today launched Europe Against Cancer Week 2004, which will focus on passive smoking, by launching a new leaflet ?For a Smoke-free Environment - Passive smoking damages your health.?
This informative leaflet, which highlights the benefits of a smoke-free environment, has been produced in partnership between the Association of European Cancer Leagues, Belgian Federation Against Cancer and the UCF and will be distributed to Employers, Unions, Secondary Schools, Further and Higher Education Colleges, Health and Leisure facilities, Libraries and Universities, local councils and health promotion departments across Northern Ireland.
Anne Devlin, Cancer Prevention Officer, Ulster Cancer Foundation said, ?The Ulster Cancer Foundation have consistently placed our demand for smoke-free environments at the forefront of our public campaigns for healthy public policy. To mark Europe Against Cancer Week we have worked with our European colleagues to develop an initiative, which will inform local people of the risks of passive smoking and the benefits of smoke-free environments. We are especially keen to inform employers and employees of their rights and responsibilities. This allied with UCF?s training, advice and consultancy service, will empower local people to achieve positive changes in their work and social environments.
?Smoking is the largest single cause of preventable death and ill health in our society today, killing 2,800 people in Northern Ireland every year. UCF has a variety of support services available including a smoking cessation support service to help people successfully give up which meets confidentially at The Malone Lodge, Eglantine Avenue, Belfast, every Wednesday evening at 7pm and we also offer a comprehensive training portfolio for professionals.
