Comment from Gerry McElwee, Head of Cancer Prevention, Ulster Cancer Foundation (UCF),
?The recent announcement from cigarette maker Gallaher, that sales have dropped by 7%, highlights that people in the Republic of Ireland are complying with the smoking workplace legislation. Most smokers tell the Ulster Cancer Foundation they want to quit and will do so in great numbers if we provide them with smokefree environments to work and socialise in.
?There is overwhelming public support for healthy smokefree workplaces in the Republic, as smokers and non-smokers alike are reaping the benefits with one in five smokers now choosing not to smoke at all during their night out and more non-smokers are now socialising in pubs and restaurants.
?Smoking is the largest single cause of preventable death and ill health in our society today, killing 2,800 people in Northern Ireland every year. Ending smoking in workplaces and enclosed public places is the single most effective action the Government could do to protect non-smokers and encourage more smokers to quit.
?The Ulster Cancer Foundation has a variety of support services available including a smoking cession support service to help people successfully give up. For further information on UCF?s Smoking Cessation Clinics or groups please contact Bernie Neeson on 028 9049 2007.?
