The Ulster Cancer Foundation (UCF) are currently working together with the Peninsula Healthy Living Partnership to encourage men to be health aware in the run up to Men’s Health Week, 14th-20th June 2004.
UCF branded beermats have been distributed to pubs and clubs throughout the Ards Peninsula in an attempt to encourage men to be aware of the signs and symptoms of male specific cancers and encourage them to report any concerns to their doctor early.
Clare Smith, Cancer Prevention Officer, explained, “The important messages are that we can avoid up to two thirds of cancers by adopting a healthy lifestyle. In addition many other cancers can be cured if patients report suspicious symptoms at an early stage. The good news from the recent Northern Ireland Cancer Registry Report is that survival rates are improving all the time and many thousands of cancer patients recover to lead a full and active life. Traditionally men can have problems discussing health issues. The Ulster Cancer Foundation aims to reduce any fear, anxiety or embarrassment associated with all cancers.
“UCF offers a free, confidential Helpline which provides information, sympathetic advice and support and someone to talk to about cancer. It is available not only to patients but also to relatives, friends and health professionals and anyone seeking cancer related information. We hope that eventually more men will avail of this service.”
The Freefone Cancer Helpline number is: 0800 783 33 39.
Sheila Bailie, Peninsula Healthy Living Partnership Co-ordinator added, “We decided to work with the UCF on this important project to encourage men throughout the Ards Peninsula to be more aware of their health, especially male specific cancers. The cancer awareness message has been targeted at men in a social environment, which we hope will encourage men to share health experiences. “
