Leading local charity, the Ulster Cancer Foundation (UCF) has welcomed today?s launch of the new Northern Ireland Cancer Registry Report, marking ten years of this essential work.
Arlene Spiers, Chief Executive, UCF stated, ?The Ulster Cancer Foundation congratulates the N. Ireland Cancer Registry for this comprehensive and informative report. We would also like to thank cancer patients for providing their personal information, without which this report would not be possible.
?The information and statistical analysis provided by the N. Ireland Cancer Registry underpins every single aspect of cancer services here in Northern Ireland, informing decisions on planning, screening, treatment, prevention and cancer research. The effectiveness of all these areas depends entirely on accurate baseline statistics and trends, which the Registry provides.
?Prior to 1994 complete information on cancer incidence and deaths here was not available. With the sterling work of Dr. Anna Gavin and her team at the Northern Ireland Cancer Registry we now have a world-class service for local people.
?We are proud to have been instrumental in establishing the Cancer Registry ten years ago and are committed to continuing our support for this work.?
UCF also welcomed the news in today?s report that the incidence of certain cancers, for example bladder, kidney, lung (male), and oral cancers have all reduced, as has cancer of the colon. The prognosis is also improving for patients with breast, ovarian and colon cancers, which is good news indeed.
