The Chief Constable of the PSNI, Mr Hugh Orde, launched a new police charity cycle challenge today.
The PSNI-An Garda Siochana Charity Cycle Challenge will take place from 7 September ? 11 September 2004 and will raise money for three charities, the Ulster Cancer Foundation, the Irish Cancer Society and Co-operation Ireland.
The 392-mile cycle will take the 12 cyclists (6 from the PSNI, 6 from An Garda Siochana) from one end of Ireland to the other, Mizen head in Co Cork to Malin Head in Co Dongeal.
The Charity Cycle Challenge is the brainchild of Brian Cranston, a police officer from Belfast. He said, ?I am delighted that the challenge is being undertaken for three great charities. Already all of us are looking forward to going down to Cork to undertake the challenge and making new friends on the route. It should be a great event.?
As well as the 12 police officers taking part in the challenge there are facilities for an additional 50 cyclists interested in undertaking the challenge and raising funds for the three charities.
Neill Grainger of the Ulster Foundation said ?we are delighted with this major initiative by both police forces and we encourage all cyclists to join this challenging but fun event. We believe that many local people will benefit from the substantial funds generated from the cycle.?
Tony Kennedy, Chief Executive of Co-operation Ireland added, ?We in Co-operation Ireland are delighted at this momentous gesture in support of our peace building work with young people which simultaneously supports the Irish Cancer Society and the Ulster Cancer Foundation. This bike ride that they are undertaking is certainly no picnic but the police cyclists are determined to complete the 392 miles in 5 days. It certainly won?t leave too much time for sightseeing?
Anyone interested in undertaking the challenge should contact Co-operation Ireland?s events team at (028) 90321462.
