New Bra Fitting Service for Breast Surgery Patients in the North West
By Derval Keenan, 5/24/2004 4:23:52 PM

A new Ulster Cancer Foundation fitting service for women who have had breast cancer is now available at Altnagelvin Hospital in Londonderry.

UCF is providing the professional bra fitting and measuring service free of charge. Women who have had a mastectomy can purchase items at cost price from an attractive range of pocketed bras and swimsuits. There is also a selection of headwear for women who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy treatment.

The service will be provided at Altnagelvin every Thursday from 10am-4pm. Appointments can be made by phoning co-ordinator Lynn Young on 028 7134 5171 ext 4747.

At the launch Arlene Spiers, Chief Executive, Ulster Cancer Foundation welcomed what she described as a very worthwhile partnership with Altnagelvin Hospital. She said, ?“The fitting service provided at our headquarters in Belfast has been a great success and we are delighted to extend it to women in the north west of the province. It will obviously be much more convenient for women to come to Altnagelvin, rather than have to travel to Belfast.?”

?“Women can be sure of a personal service on an individual and confidential basis, and they will be treated with respect and understanding in a safe and friendly environment.?”

Stella Burnside, Chief Executive, Altnagelvin Hospital said, "I am delighted to welcome the fitting service to Altnagelvin Hospital. As well as providing an important service for women who have had breast cancer, it is an opportunity to enhance the hospital's already established partnership with the Ulster Cancer Foundation so that working together, and with other agencies, people with cancer, and their families and carers, are helped through every stage of their illness."

At the launch event patients, including UTV presenter and journalist Anne Hailes, had the opportunity to comment on the new service. Anne said, "I know from experience how important it is to have such a service available, especially at a time when you don't want to travel far and you do want familiar surrounding, so by providing this in the Altnagelvin Hospitals Trust area, the Ulster Cancer Foundation are proving they are sensitive to the needs of women in the North West."

Further information about this fitting service at Altnagelvin or any other services offered by the Ulster Cancer Foundation can be obtained from Ruth Campbell, UCF Head of Care Services, on 028 9066 3281.
