The Ulster Cancer Foundation and Marie Curie Cancer Care have come together this year to jointly launch their Daffodil Appeals
These Appeals will raise funds for research and care services for people with cancer across Northern Ireland. The Marie Curie Cancer Care Daffodil Campaign and the Ulster Cancer Foundation Daffodil Appeal are the most important campaigns of the year for both charities. This year by coming together, they are aiming to make the appeals even more successful and are asking the Northern Ireland public to help them in providing their vital services throughout the province.
Local charity the Ulster Cancer Foundation has been running the Daffodil Appeal in Northern Ireland successfully for the past 16 years which has enabled them to carry out vital work such as Cancer Research, Education and Prevention programmes as well as providing care and support for patients and their families. UCF needs to raise £100,000 through this year?s appeal, which will fund care services locally for cancer patients, as well as bringing hope for the future through cancer research.
Joyce Savage, Head of Appeals and Marketing, Ulster Cancer Foundation said, ?The incidence of some cancers continue to rise in Northern Ireland, but many cancers previously thought incurable are now being treated successfully. Research funded by UCF in Northern Ireland continues to shed light on this complex disease, its causes and treatment, and advances are being made.
However, it remains the case that there is little that causes as much anxiety and distress to people and their families as a diagnosis of cancer. Many feel frightened and very much alone. UCF provides care and support for people with cancer when they need it most.?
Marie Curie Cancer Care has been running its Daffodil Campaign in England, Scotland and Wales for 13 years and has introduced the Campaign locally for the first time this year. Last year?s Daffodil Campaign, supported by Yellow Pages, brought in just under £2 million across the UK to help fund Marie Curie Nurses. This year, the Marie Curie campaign in Northern Ireland aims to raise sufficient funds to provide over 300 nursing shifts in local patient?s homes.
Alec Barclay, Marie Curie Cancer Care Fundraising Manager for Northern Ireland added, ?Every daffodil makes a memory and this year in Northern Ireland many dedicated collectors and retailers will be selling Marie Curie Cancer Care?s bright yellow fabric daffodils.
Every donation made in exchange for a daffodil will help the charity provide high quality nursing, totally free, to give terminally ill people throughout Northern Ireland the choice of dying at home supported by their families. In addition funds raised will support the Marie Curie Centre in Belfast which actively promotes quality of life for people with cancer and provides support for their families.?
Both charities will have their collection boxes filled with Daffodil flowers and pins ? (Daffodils are the international symbol of hope in the fight against cancer) displayed in various retail outlets, companies and organisations throughout March.
