The Ulster Cancer Foundation has welcomed the launch of the DHSSPS Tobacco Action Plan Consultation process.
Gerry McElwee, UCF head of cancer prevention, said: “We have been involved from the outset in drawing up this Action Plan. We believe the measures outlined will lead to a significant improvement in the health of local people.
“The Foundation will use the consultation period to discuss ways in which the plan might be strengthened with a view to preventing young people from starting smoking, helping smokers quit and promoting a smokefree culture, especially in bars and restaurants. It is vital that, following this consultation process, the measures should be introduced as soon as possible.
“We also call on the UK Government to urgently introduce, as promised, an approved code of practice banning smoking in the workplace, and a total ban on tobacco advertising.”
