The Ulster Cancer Foundation (UCF), in association with Stena Line, has launched a competition for primary schools, offering one lucky winner and their classmates an exciting day trip to Scotland.
The competition is featured in the latest edition of UCF?s Smokebusters newsletter, distributed to all schools in Northern Ireland who have enrolled in the Smokebusters Club.
Judith West, Smokebusters Project Officer at UCF said, ?This year we are delighted to give one class the opportunity to enjoy a very special day out. Thanks to Stena Line, the winner and their classmates will travel on the Stena HSS from Belfast to Stranraer and then on to Scotland?s best theme park - M&D?s in Motherwell. It will certainly be a day to remember!
?To enter the competition, schools must be members of the Smokebusters Club ? an exclusive club for Key Stage 2 pupils. If your school hasn?t already enrolled, it?s not too late to do so online at ulstercancer.org/aboutucf/smokebusters.html.
?Smokebusters is a special smoking prevention programme, which promotes a smokefree lifestyle to children. It also encourages them to create smokefree environments in their schools, homes and wider communities.
?We were delighted when the Health Minister Shaun Woodward announced that from April 2007, all workplaces and enclosed public places in Northern Ireland will be smokefree. This will undoubtedly contribute to a healthier society, however with almost a quarter of our population addicted to nicotine, we will be continuing our education programmes on smoking prevention.?
Research into the Northern Ireland Smokebusters programme shows that
ex-Smokebusters who have been members of the club knew more about smoking, had a less positive attitude to smoking and are less likely to start smoking.
Membership of the Smokebusters Club is offered to all schools free of charge. Upon joining, schools receive a special teachers pack with teaching resources, posters, leaflets and the Smokebusters certificate for display in the classroom.
The Smokebusters project is operated by UCF and has the support of the Northern, Eastern, Southern and Western Health and Social Services Boards.
