Forget Me Not Funds. Celebrating a Life ?– Making a difference.
By Derval Keenan, 2/2/2006 2:29:30 PM

In recent years, an increasing number of people have asked us about ways to remember or honour someone special by making gifts in their name to the Ulster Cancer Foundation.

These are special and meaningful gifts, and we recognize and value them as such. Many of our supporters have told us they want to support the Foundation in the name of their loved one, as a very positive way to keep their spirit alive and as a thank you for services they have received from us. These gifts also ensure the continuation of our work to support other families in Northern Ireland affected by cancer, and fund vital local research.

With this in mind, we have established a very special programme, called Forget Me Not Funds. These Tribute Funds are a positive and simple way for friends and family to remember a loved one, and in their name, help fund vital cancer research and services here in Northern Ireland.

Mary McClean set up the Margaret Robinson Forget Me Not Fund after she lost her mother to lung cancer. ?“I decided that I wanted something positive to come out of what was a very painful time. I know that the thought that we can help other people in our community in Mum?’s name in this way has been very comforting for people in my family, particularly my aunt who is always doing things to raise money for mum?’s Forget Me Not fund. It?’s her silver wedding anniversary early next year and she?’s already decided that she would rather have gifts into Mum?’s Fund than presents which I think is a nice idea. Mum would have been so touched. It?’s given us all a positive way to channel our emotions and grief.?”

Family, friends and even colleagues can support the Funds in any way that is right for them. Some people have decided to make regular gifts by standing order, or to make donations on special occasions or on a significant date, like a birthday. Others participate in sponsored events, like treks or runs, or raise funds by organising no smoking days, fancy dress parties, pub quizzes or even just having a box to collect money. However you choose to grow your Fund is up to you, but every penny makes a difference. Many people find that having a fund in the name of their loved one, such as the Margaret Robinson Forget Me Not Fund is a very positive and special way to remember them. If you would like further information on Forget Me Not Funds please contact Deborah McWhirter on 028 9049 2007.
