Northern Ireland Thinks Pink!
By Derval Keenan, 11/7/2005 4:08:10 PM

Thousands of people across Northern Ireland participated in Pink Link to support local women with breast cancer.

Pink Link took place on Friday 7th October at 1.15pm outside all 44 Gordons Chemists stores throughout Northern Ireland. Everyone was encouraged to join the Pink Link and sign the ribbon of hope. Some people even wrote a short dedication to a lost loved one or in support of a family member/friend currently undergoing treatment and gave a donation to the campaign.

Pink Link, in association with Gordons Chemists, is an awareness and fundraising initiative and is part of the Ulster Cancer Foundation?’s Think Pink! breast cancer campaign.

Joyce Savage, Head of Appeals & Marketing at UCF said, ?“Last year over 4,000 people showed their support for local women with breast cancer by joining the Pink Link. Together with Gordons Chemists we raised an astounding £30,000, which was used to provide much needed support services, prevention campaigns and research into the causes of breast cancer.

Robert Gordon from Gordons Chemists added his support to the initiative:

?“We are delighted once again to be able to partner this vital and life-saving campaign. Our hope is that not only will Gordons Chemists support the Pink Link in raising much needed funds but that our business and the role of the community pharmacy might benefit through increased awareness of early breast cancer detection through our stores right across the province.?”

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in local women. Over 900 are diagnosed with the disease every year and although this figure increases slightly every year, the good news is more and more women are surviving the disease. Research funded by UCF in Northern Ireland continues to shed light on this complex disease, its causes and treatment, and advances are being made.

UCF is hosting a number of events throughout October, breast cancer awareness month. Please contact UCF for further information on Think Pink luncheons on Friday 14th October in the Killyhevlin Hotel, Enniskillen with special guest speaker Billy Dixon (celebrity image consultant) and Friday 21st October at the Europa Hotel with guest speaker Ann Widdecombe, MP. Tickets for both events are now on sale.
