Arlene Spiers receives OBE

Arlene Spiers, Chief Executive of the Ulster Cancer Foundation (UCF) received her OBE at an Investiture in Buckingham Palace recently. Arlene?s OBE for services to healthcare was announced in the New Year Honours List and she received her award from Prince Charles.
Speaking of her award, Arlene said, ?I am proud to be the recipient of such an honour. The Investiture was a unique experience and I was delighted to be representing the Ulster Cancer Foundation at Buckingham Palace. This award reflects the tireless work by the whole team at UCF and is a great encouragement to continue our efforts to provide specialist care services for people with cancer in Northern Ireland.?
Arlene started her nursing career at the Royal Victoria and Royal Belfast Maternity Hospitals before becoming a health visitor with the Southern Health & Social Services Board and the Eastern Health & Social Services Board.
Since joining the Ulster Cancer Foundation in 1980 she has been involved in all aspects of the charity?s work including cancer prevention, education and community services before being appointed Chief Executive in 2001.
