Anne Represents UCF Stateside
By Derval Keenan, 7/26/2005 3:03:15 PM

Anne Devlin, a Cancer Prevention Officer with the Ulster Cancer Foundation (UCF), is getting ready for a learning experience of a lifetime, as she prepares to attend an intensive four-week training course at the National Cancer Institute in Maryland, USA.

Anne secured one of only twenty places available to participants from the island of Ireland and is delighted to be representing UCF stateside, while attending a specialised training course on the ?‘Principles and Practice of Cancer Prevention and Control?’.

The course, which runs from 5th-29th July, is designed to provide an interactive training experience to allow participants to develop a thorough knowledge of the activities in cancer prevention and control.

Anne who has a BSc Biomedical Science (QUB) and MSc Health Promotion (UUJ) said, ?“I am thrilled to be attending the National Cancer Institute training programme where I will be learning from some of the world?’s leading cancer prevention experts. It will also be a great opportunity to network and learn from people of various nationalities and other health related disciplines. It will undoubtedly add value to our cancer prevention strategy in Northern Ireland.?”

Arlene Spiers, Chief Executive, UCF said, ?“We have an excellent policy of continuous staff development, which encourages all employees to learn and expand their skills base. Anne is the second UCF member of staff to attend this course and we hope that she will bring back the most up to date strategies on cancer prevention to help local people reduce their risk of the disease.?”

The course focuses on concepts, methods, issues and applications related to cancer prevention and participants will gain a broad-based perspective in terms of available resources, scientific data and quantitative and qualitative methods.

The National Cancer Institute Summer Curriculum in cancer prevention faculty consists of approximately 85 leading scientists from the National Cancer Institute, National Institute of Health, other government agencies, academia, cancer centres and public and private organisations throughout the USA.
