A new smoking cessation clinic has been set up in Comber and anyone interested in giving up smoking is invited to attend. The clinic, which is co-ordinated by the Ulster Cancer Foundation, is free, confidential and meets every Tuesday night at Comber Leisure Centre between 7.00 and 8.00pm.
Hilary McHenry, the smoking cessation specialist nurse says, ?Stopping smoking is a big challenge but many people find that they can increase their chances of success by using group support ? like a smoking cessation clinic.
?There is no need to make an appointment, it?s just a matter of dropping in between 7pm and 8pm. The group is very informal and provides an opportunity to find out more about smoking habits, tips for giving up, how to cope with cravings as well as support from other smokers.
?Many people find that it helps to build confidence and increases their self-belief. Many also gain inspiration from chatting to others in a similar situation and learning what has worked for them.?
All the GPs in the area have given their support to the clinic. Dr Horner from Comber Health Centre said, ?Many people really want to give up smoking and the cessation clinic provides support when it is needed most ? especially in the early stages when many people are most vulnerable and are likely to give in to temptation. Anyone wanting to attend the clinic can be referred through his or her GP or just by dropping in to the leisure centre on Tuesday evening.?
Ulster Cancer Foundation?s Bernie Neeson, Smoking Cessation Co-ordinator added, ?The effects of giving up smoking has an immediate impact. Straight away you will have fresher breath, hair and clothes as well as more money in your pocket. Within 20 minutes your blood pressure and pulse rates begin to return to normal and within a day your risk of heart attack falls. Your sense of taste and smell improves within 2 days and after a year the risk of sudden death from a heart attack is almost halved while the risk from cancer is also reduced.?
