The Challenge of Cancer Conference
By Derval Keenan, 6/1/2005 12:23:20 PM

The Ulster Cancer Foundation (UCF) is holding a one-day conference entitled the ?‘Challenge of Cancer?’ to provide information and support for all those affected by cancer. The conference will take place on Saturday 16th April at the Wellington Park Hotel, Belfast and is aimed at cancer patients, their friends and families, carers, health professionals and anyone concerned about cancer.

The Conference speakers include leading medical experts as well as personal accounts and experiences from cancer patients. Dr Seamus McAleer, Consultant Oncologist at Belfast City Hospital specialises in cancers of the breast, testes and melanoma and will be speaking on the challenge of treating cancer. Dr Mary Morris, Clinical Psychologist in the Western Board area provides a service for patients and their carers will be presenting on the challenges of living with cancer while Alan George, UCF?’s new Head of Care Services will be exploring channels of support.

Renowned author Stella Duffy will be presenting ?‘Breaststrokes?’ a show she wrote after her diagnosis of breast cancer in 2000, which follows her own journey with the disease. Time Out describes her account as, ?“unflinchingly honest, funny and profoundly moving.?”

Ruth Campbell, soon to retire as Head of Care Services with UCF added, ?“We are delighted to have so many excellent speakers for this year?’s conference and I am sure that they will inform and inspire the audience. The conference is one of the most important events in the year for UCF and it gives patients, their families and health professionals a chance to get together to share their experiences.?”

The conference runs from 10am - 3.30pm and costs £10 per person, including lunch. A limited number of spaces are still available and anyone wishing to secure a place should register with Eileen Creery at Ulster Cancer Foundation, Tel: 028 9049 2007 as soon as possible.
