The Ulster Cancer Foundation has welcomed Health Minister Bairbre de Brún?s commitment to Tobacco Advertising and Promotion Bill.
The Ulster Cancer Foundation?s Head of Cancer Prevention Gerry McElwee said:
?The Minister?s decision will save lives. Tobacco kills nearly 3,000 local people every year. When the Tobacco Advertising and Promotion Bill completed its passage through the House of Lords last month we called on Bairbre de Brún to have Northern Ireland included. We are delighted that she has done so.
?The Foundation?s Smokebusters Programme aims to prevent young people from starting to smoke. Until now our work has been undermined by advertising which associates smoking with speed, glamour and sophistication. Research shows that young people smoke the most advertised brands. We also know that children who are fans of sports which promote tobacco are more likely to become smokers.?
The Foundation?s Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) Committee believes that the Government should provide short-term funding to those sporting and arts events which promote tobacco until they can access alternative sponsorship.
