Abbey Launches Daffodil Appeal
By Derval Keenan, 6/1/2005 12:21:07 PM

It?’s a double celebration for the Ulster Cancer Foundation (UCF) as Abbey announce UCF as their chosen ?‘Charity of the Year?’ and help them launch their annual Daffodil Appeal.

Local charity, UCF has been running the Daffodil Appeal in Northern Ireland successfully for the past 17 years, which has enabled them to carry out vital work such as cancer research, education and prevention programmes as well as providing care and support for patients and their families. The Daffodil is now recognised as the international symbol of hope in the fight against cancer and UCF needs to raise £100,000 through this year?’s appeal, which will fund care services locally for cancer patients, as well as bringing hope for the future through cancer research.

Joyce Savage, Head of Appeals and Marketing, UCF said, ?“The incidence of some cancers continue to rise in Northern Ireland, but many cancers previously thought incurable are now being treated successfully. UCF is one of the leading investors in cancer research in Northern Ireland and our policy, implemented by an advisory panel of cancer research experts, is to pump-prime innovative and groundbreaking research in our local universities. Research funded by UCF in Northern Ireland continues to shed light on this complex disease, its causes and treatment, and advances are being made.

?“However, it remains the case that there is little that causes as much anxiety and distress to people and their families as a diagnosis of cancer. Many feel frightened and very much alone. UCF provides care and support for people with cancer when they need it most and we are delighted that Abbey will have a real impact, helping us, help you, by improving the outlook for cancer patients in Northern Ireland.?”
Marianne Creaney, Abbey Events Coordinator said, ?“Nominating a ?‘Charity of the Year?’ is the biggest way Abbey can help local people and by supporting UCF, we hope to make a real difference by investing in cancer research and improving care services for cancer patients and their families. We aim to promote team building and boost staff morale by holding a wide variety of creative fundraising events for UCF, which really puts the fun into fundraising!?”

UCF will have their collection boxes filled with Daffodil flowers and new glitzy pins displayed in all Abbey branches and other various retail outlets, companies and organisations throughout March. If you would like to lend your support to the appeal please order a box of daffodil pins today by contacting Leonne at UCF on 028 9049 2007.
