Householders Urged to ?‘Clear out for Cancer?’
By Derval Keenan, 6/1/2005 12:20:23 PM

The Ulster Cancer Foundation (UCF) is urging people throughout Northern Ireland to have a New Year clear out for cancer!

Whether it?’s unwanted Christmas gifts or you feel like ?‘Feng Shui?’ de-cluttering in the New Year, UCF shops will gratefully accept all donations of any unwanted items of clothing, bed linen, bric-a-brac, CD?’s, books, shoes and handbags and any other household items. A number of UCF shops also accept a wide range of furniture, which can be collected, as can larger donations i.e. over 8 black bags of goods.

Hilary Hayes, UCF Shops Co-ordinator said, ?“Our shops have received incredible support from local communities across Northern Ireland and without them our contribution to UCF?’s life saving work wouldn?’t be possible. Following in the wake of the Boxing Day Tsunami disasters in South and Southeast Asia we understand that the needs of those affected by this terrible natural disaster is immediate and immense and meeting it calls for even greater generosity from us all.

?“Unfortunately the needs of the 39,000 families currently living with cancer won?’t disappear and with 8,600 more people diagnosed every year, the Ulster Cancer Foundation has an obligation to continue providing care and services to support them. I have faith that here in Northern Ireland we will continue to provide hope for those who suffer, both here at home, and across the world, wherever it is needed.?”
UCF?’s shop network has grown from five to ten shops in the last three years and the charity aims to build on the support from communities and volunteers to open a further two shops next year.

Hilary continued, ?“We are delighted to be expanding our shop network as they provide a vital source of income as well as raising awareness about UCF?’s work in the community.

?“Our shops are also a great place to pick up a bargain. We pride ourselves not only on the quality and range of our goods but also on sensible, realistic prices, so our customers get value for money and our work gets the support it deserves.?”

As a local charity, UCF depends on the support of local people to help stock their shops with resalable items. This in turn generates the income needed to continue developing care services for cancer patients and cancer prevention programmes to save lives in Northern Ireland. If you have any unwanted household items or furniture please contact Marlene at the Ulster Cancer Foundation on 028 9049 2007.
