I think I may have cancer...

Many people have anxieties about cancer and worry about their health. While certain problems may not seem serious they may prove to be warning signs of the early stages of cancer. To see an interactive guide to the most common types of cancer, click here (requires Macromedia Flash Player), or click here (standard HTML version).

Symptoms to watch out for include:

  • A lump.
  • A sore which does not heal.
  • A mole which changes in shape, size or colour.
  • Persistent cough or hoarseness.
  • Change in bowel or bladder habits e.g. diarrhoea or constipation.
  • Unexplained weight loss.

Remember nine out of ten lumps are not cancerous and many other changes can have a simple explanation so your worries may be unfounded. However, the only way to be sure is to visit your GP (family doctor). Your doctor may be able to put your mind at ease immediately, but if not, he/she may refer you to a specialist for further tests.

Waiting for test results can be an anxious time, so phone our Freefone Helpline 0800 783 33 39 and speak to one of our experienced cancer nurses. Do remember the sooner a cancer is detected and treated, the better the outcome.

So if you are worried do make an appointment to see you doctor. It could save your life.
