Bullet Point Bartholins Cysts

I Had a Bartholins Cyst which formed and abcess in dec 2002. it started with a lump and then in got so big i could hardly walk, so i went to my docs and he told me what it was and gave me antibiotics which didnt seem to work just made the abcess/cysts go rock hard, then 2 days later i couldnt stand it any longer so i went to my hospital who examined me and admitted me for a marsupilization that evening. It was the most painful thing i have had the stitches were digging in me and i couldnt go to the toilet properly.
Although it was painful and embarrasing it seemed to work. Then i had another in feb time which grew rapidly and was painful, that one burst which left me shicked and distrubed and i had to go to casulaty to receive anitbiotics for any infection it may have caused.

I know have another flare up and its painful!! I have been reading everyones comments about this and i can safley say i have not had sex at all over the last 4 months, am totally clear of any stds have not been stressed and am very hygienic person. So why do they come back, i was actually told that marsup would actually clear the problem and not have to have it again!!

Also i am quite distrubed to find this subject in a site for cancer and cancer related issues!!

I had marsupialisation of a Bartholins Cyst last year.It was a painful & uncomfortable operation/recovery. The cyst came back after a few months, very badly infected. Antibiotics don't help so 3 weeks ago I had the cyst removed along with the gland it grows in. The doctors say it can now not grow back as its host (the gland) is not there. However, the operation was the most painful experience and the recovery time is quite long.
I have external groin cysts too and wonder if there is a reason why I get these things?
The cysts all came up at the same time as I was diagnosed with pre-cancerous cells on my cervix. Is there a link?

I recently was diagnosed with a Bartholin's cyst. I had it marsupialized four weeks ago. The procedure, itself, was not painful in the least, but because of the thinness of the skin in that area, the stitched came out too early and the "pouch" closed up as a result. The cyst has since reoccurred and is twice the size as before. It is now uncomfortable to sit and sex is out of the question. I have another appointment for marsupialization on Aug. 12, this time at the hospital where the doctor can have better lighting and stronger sutchers. My questiont to anyone that is reading, however, is would it be better to get the gland removed. I do not want to have to keep getting the cysts marsupialized but, at the same time, I do not want to deal with a very painful recovery that leaves scar tissue and makes sex and having children difficult and painful. I would like to hear from anyone that has had the gland removed. I want to know the good, the bad, and the ugly so to speak. Please feel free to email me at jesscaholmes@hotmail.com with any helpful information that you have. Thanks.

I just had a marsiapilization done 3 days ago and it wasnt all that bad the worst thing was that I had an epidural and afterwards my back was really sore and also the medicine they gave me didn't really take away the pain it only made me feel like i was out of it.... I have been suffering with this problem for over 10 years now before the marsipulization procedure about 7 years ago I had it drained and it came back a month later. I am hoping this will work because I hear alot of you saying that you had this procedure done and it closed back up again and formed a bigger cysts if that happens I am going to have it removed the whole gland..However it was a relief to finally have my vagina be normal size and not swollen and irritated so far soo good on the marsipulization as for the cause of these things I read somewhere that it could be hereditary sure enough I called my cousin the other day and she confirmed that she has been suffering with the same problem but is afraid to get it taken care of I assured her that the sooner the better...That is the key to get it checked out right away ...before it gets out of control and not to feel bad because it happened to you Its not anything you did or didn't do it just happened I read that even those who are not sexually active have them Also what has helped me alot is to improve your diet...I used to be a vegetarian now I am well balanced in what I eat and get plenty of rest and as little stress as possible...And also my boyfriend has been very supportive dont go through this alone ladies if you have questions email me :lilgwendolyn@hotmail.com

God bless you all..

I had a bartholins cyst in 2002 which subsided on its own and it reoccured again in 2003. I carried it for four weeks until it got very painful and the doctor said it had formed into an abses. The have operated me and removed all the puss. According to the doctor the route cause of the cyst is hormonal imbalance. I dont know what to do? Has anyone fully recovered from a cyst

Hi I'm not sure if I have a Bartholin's cyst as I don't know what it is. I found this site as I was looking for vaginal abcess as I have been diagnosed as having one today. I had one last September and after having intravenous antibiotics it discharged and then cleared up. Is this the same thing. I am also worried as to where I got it from. I am also now more concerned as this is in a cancer website. Your help would be much appreciated.

Hello I have a long history of Bartholins Abcess...first one in Sept 2001 which was very large and painful and ended up being marsupulized with a pack in for the first few hours. Since then i have had a further marsupulization and 4other abcess which have drained eventually without surgical intervention. Each time i have one i feel quite poorly, in pain and it therefore interferes with family life. Not to mention the massess of antibiotics i take.
So now i have had 6 Bartholins abcess and had to go to urgent gynae clinic last week as i now have a cyst. Advice appears to be now to remove the Batholins gland and duct hence stopping any chance of reoccurance. I realise i cannot continue to have these problems so frequently but obviously have concerns. Has anyone had removal of the gland and duct and if so how does the scar compare to Marsupulization, recovery period, post op intercourse, lubrication . If anyone has experienced this and feel able to share their experience or would like any help from me please mail me ConlonRJ@aol.com

I have had a cyst for about 5 months now, my practice nurse said not to worry, but over the last weekend it has increased in size, and I am quite worried as puss has actually started to come out of the cyst,I now believe it to be a abcess looking at this site, but if it is a bartholins cyst I would be very reluctant to have the op.

I had my first cyst in 1994 and it was on both sides. It eventually drained on its own. The cyst came back on and off but only on one side and drained on it's own. In 1997 my cyst refused to drain and so my doc decided to lance it but of course it returned. In 1998 I found out that he should not have lanced it and should have marsupilized because it was very big, so I eventually had the surgery. Four months later it was infected again but drained on it's own. I got it lanced another time in 2000 and it was filled with blood rather than puss. I also realized this the previous time it was lanced. Apparently with me when the cyst drains on its own it is filled with puss and when the doctor lances it they always comment that it is filIed with blood. In 2002 I had another marsupilization and today I had a word catheter inserted which keeps a duct open that allows for drainage. I will have it removed in a week. I am crossing my fingers and hopng that this will be the last time I will have to deal with this. I've had this for nine years and had 2 marsupilazations, lanced 2 times and a word cather put in. I'll have to wait and see what happens.

I posted pre-op on 5/09/200 - Had another marsupulization that afternoon - cant walk- stitches poking into me - more salt baths and another $1500.00 out of pocket - lets hope this one works !

I have been trying to research recurrent bartholins cyst/ abcess but there is very little information available - I find it frustrating that the doctors Ive seen are only interested in treating this occurance and not investigating why I continue to have re-occurances- Im an otherwise fit and healthy 43 year old. When I asked again this time WHY I was told never mind you may never get another one I also heard that in 1991.

I spoke to the doctor about the number of women on this site like me who want more information and successful treatment outcomes - I dont think bartholins is high on research agendas -

Ive been also researching chronic / recurrent infections and have found information on conditions leading to a person having increased susceptibility to infections - I woud like to persue whether there is a disorder in a component in my immune response to some bacteria that makes me susceptible to recurrent infections

I got my first bartholins cyst in Jan. of 1998. I had it drained by my gynocologist in his office twice in the spring of 1998. By June of 1998 it was back and bigger than before not to mention very painful. I saw my doctor who told me the cyst was infected and that he would open it the next day. I had the marsupulization done under general anesethic. The surgery itself was no big deal-I felt better coming out of surgery than I did when my husband carried me into the hospital that morning. I had no further problems until February of 2003 when the cyst appeared again. I saw my doctor in April and he then decided to drain it and put a word catheter in, in his office. I returned for the procedure, however he couldn't get it to drain. He then sent me to a gynocology oncologist who suggested that the gland be removed. I had this done at a same day surgery center and was sent home. The only problem I experienced with the surgery that day was the inability to urinate which was solved by using a catheter. None of the nurses seemed to know what to expect in recovery and told me to do nothing the next day, followed by light activity that weekend. (I had the surgery on a Thursday afternoon) Friday was very painful and by now I had a bladder infection. Antibiotics cleared that up, but it was very uncomfortable. By Saturday I felt worse - I thought it was the situation of it gets worse before it gets better! Sunday was worse yet, then by Monday I was calling the doctor. He saw me again in his office and changed my meds. (Loratab 10's were the only thing that worked for pain, but then I was out of it!!) Now he gave me Percoset and a different antibiotic. Percoset worked until I was now throwing up. A bad situation that is getting worse each day!! Finally on Wednesday my doctor decided to see me in his office. He immediately sent me to the hospital for emergency surgery as this excrutiating pain that I was having was because I was bleeding from the original surgery. I was bruised in an area the size of a dinner plate. This bruising started before I left the same day surgery center as the nurses commented to each other about it, however since no one knew what to expect they sent me home. I had a hematoma the size of a hens egg removed that night and immediately felt better. I had a drain in place when I came out of surgery that stayed in for a few days. Now the bad part - I have the cyst back! That has only been 4 months ago and I just saw my gynocologist today who told me that either the oncologist didn't get all of the gland removed or I have something else wrong. I am now scheduled to have a CT scan and see the oncologist this week. Is there anyone else out there that has experienced anything like this? Please e-mail me at leimser@sbcglobal.net.

I am impressed to hear that a lot of you have had your whole gland removed. I have been suffering with this 'condition' since i was 16. It started with the gland on my left side, which was marsupalized and so far has remained pain free(i am 27 now). However the right side has had recurrent flare ups over the past five years. Last year the gland swelled to form an abcess and then would drain every few days for nine months, it only went away a few days before i menstrated and came back within a day or two once my period had finished.I was living on antibiotics. I was promised a referal for removal of the duct but every time i was booked into to hospital for treatment the abscess had started to drain so the surgeon told me it was impossible to operate, my doctor told my to visit the A.& E whenever i had a flare up, but the doctors would just send me home with antibiotics.I eventually manged to see the head gynae surgeon at my local hospital who told me to come in and ask for her when it next flared up and she would book me in straight away and the duct would be removed. The day before New Years Eve 2002, i went to hospital at 11am, to be kept nil by mouth and told that the surgeons on duty were not experienced enough to reove the gland, only to drain it, so i would receive surgery the next day. The next day i underwent surgery, and thought for the first time in years that i was free of infections and the subsequent feelings of being run down and tired and in pain. I left the hospital the same day only to return to a different hospital three days later with green smelly discharge and frequent bleeding and massive pain. I was told i had an infection in the wound site and was put on iv antibiotics for four days. As this hospital had not done the surgery they were unwilling to fully investigate, or even examine me properly, so i returned to the head gynae surgeon at the original hospital. She had examined me for no more than 10secs when she said she could see what had happened, the surgeon who had doenthe operation had drained the abscess and stitched it back up, she hadnt even performed a proper marsupialization. i was asked to return the following day for surgery that she herself would do. I came round from the operation in more pain than childbirth and was given morphine. I was almost bedridden for to weeks, a combination of the effects of he strong pain killers and the actual pain itself, and probably of havinr undergone 2 lots of surgery within 10 days. At the time though i didnt care because i thought that after this amount of pain it couldnt possibly return. Here i sit today and suprice suprise i have an abcess again! I was told that the whole gland could not be removed as it actually lies quite deep inside the body and goes some way up the back. I see some of you have been adivsed that this is however possible, my only thought though is that i am in the uk an i get the impression a lot of you are in the US. I would be really interested to here from soemone who has has the complete gland removed. I would also be interested in trying to find more research,as some of you have mentioned enough is not being done, you only have to look in any physiology book to see that from the lack of informaton present. My GP has also told me it may be stress related, well that infomration alone and my experience over the last year is enough to stress me out so that the abscess continues to flare up, i think it is all to easy for practioners to blame it on stress, it takes them out of the treatment loop. Please, i will email all those who have left their addresses, anyone who wants to feel free to contact me at jemstarxx@aol.com

Golly, I thot I was alone in my pain and desperation. From what I have read and researched, only 2% of women are affected. Wish those odds applied to the lottery and me! I had my first "swelling and pain" in 7/2002. My gyno did the antibiotic thing, but it was not effective. Since that time, I have had about 8 episodes of abcesses. I am 50 (tomorrow) have a history of reproductive cancer and my gyno still wants to prescribe antibiotics. She has advised me to come into her office for a marsupialization when the dang thing is huge and pussy. But now that it is so, (ouch ouch) she tells me to make an appointment to come into her office. Needless to say, she is now fired and I have an appointment with another gyno. I have to wait at least 7 days before the former gyno will release my records (!) and I would like the new gyno to just remove the whole damn gland. Can anyone who has had this removal performed tell me what to expect? The procedure, the pain, the scar, and the effect of the procedure on your sex life. Please e-mail me at: jezebelnfriends@yahoo.com. Please! and Thank-you.

OK i just had a bartholin cyst drained yesterday. I have to say it was the most painful thing i have ever done.I went into the Er Sat. afternoon and by Sat night they finally admitted me after a Cat scan and a VERY painful pap smear. The Dr. told me if i wouldnt of came in when i did,i would more than likely died at home. because of the infection i have.Sat. afternoon the cyst was the size of a SOFT ball. They were going to make me have surgery Sunday morning but they said if i did the infection would be though out my body in 15 mins after opening it up. So to make a long story short i had it Monday morning. They released me Monday night from the hospital monday night, i went home in more pain then i went into the hospital. and Bleeding like you wouldnt believe. My Dr. said bleeding was normal. this is my frist cyst. Hopefully my last. Which from reading the other posts in here. it doesnt sound like it will be. Im asking any one that has been thur this please enlighten me with some info me and my soon to be hubby are dumbfounded. I am dieing to know where this thing came from and WHY. They told me that having kids is out of the question now for the most part.. and then told me that this was from a STD. which we are BOTH STD free. so we are very confused. email me at snow_angel_4_me@yahoo.com

Hello, my name is Michelle.Im currently living in Hong Kong and was admitted to the hospital on Sunday afternoon with a "Bartholins Cyst"! After 10 years I now know the name !
I have suffered on and off too for the past 10 years or so. Iam 36 years old, In the past I would feel the cyst coming up usually on the right side of the lowes wall of the vagina, it would be very painful and I would have to see the gyno to have it lanced and drained under local taking a 30 minute visit to the local GP.
Usually came back every 1/2 years. This time I have had 3 in one year??
Anyway this time I was admitted to the "Government hospital" as it had become so swollen and the pain unbearable.Im currently not working, and cannot afford privat,.I was weary but had no choice.!
I was in excrutiating pain, could not sit, walk, stand. I was told I was to have a marsupulation operation under general.I was very scared, I was alone and well anyway, the next thing I knew was I woke up in the operating theatre and felt this feeling of total relaxation, the op was a success and I was home and dry!.The next morning I was so happy that I finally had peace inside my body again. The doctors came around and informed me I had had the abcess/cyst removed and they had also removed the gland.? They also took blood from me for tests for diabeties? they are not possitive on this, but because of the history of the cyst, they want to check this avenue out?I will be returning in 2 weeks time. For now I have lots of salt baths and I'm putting my feet up. I feel rather tired, Im still taking anti biotics and a few pain killers but apart from that Im hoping and praying this is the last time I have to go through this .Anyone out there who is afraid, I would say as long as you are with a proffesional who understands womens gyno matters....be strong...feel that fear...but do it anyway.........so far I would say success!

This is site is truly amazing and incredibly helpful. I like many others, just stumbled upon this discussion out of the desire to learn more about what these cysts are all about. I am 25 and had my first bartholin cyst about two months ago. I went to my family doctor and at that time there was nothing she could do for me (either she was too in-experienced with them or it wasn't ready to be "taken care of") and referred me to a gyno. I was in extreme pain and had the cyst for only a few days at that point. My doctor also prescribed me Z-pak, because I am allergic to penicillin, just as a precautionary measure. I ended up taking the prescrip. b/c the pain was so horrible, like someone else mentioned a constant pinching feeling.

The cyst went away within a few days, after a few sitz baths a day and I think due to the antibiotics, but I'm not completely sure b/c it came back a week ago today. Same situation as last, not so big like others describe, maybe the size of a quarter. I went to the gyno this time a few days ago and the cyst was too far into the skin that it would've made no sense to lance it she said and told me to do some watchful waiting until next week, continuing the baths and even hot compresses. She too prescribed the Z-pack once again and I have not started it yet b/c I am leery of taking another prescription...however, the pain is almost excruciating at times and seems to get worse as the days go by, even with 3-4 baths a day and compresses. I think I may have to try the prescrip. again today and see what happens. I am extremely unhappy about the options I have to get rid of this thing, since others have had the exp. of it coming back, leaving the option of excision as a last resort. If anyone can be of help to me about how prescrips. may or may not help with this that would be great and which ones effectively work besides penicillin based ones. I have been sexually active with my boyfriend of almost two years and also have noticed issues with lubrication recently, maybe due to a serious problem with the gland itself.

I pray that we find the answers all of us our seeking about these cysts and that everyone keeps their head up about this. Incredibly reassuring to know I am not the only one!! If anyone can be of help please contact me in email....
thanks:-)

im so glad that i am not the only one!!. i had my first cyst 8 years ago when i was 17 and i thought i was dying. i was too embarrased to tell my mum and it eventually burst. within weeks i had another, i could not take the pain so i went to a gyni clinic and they lanced it with no analgesia. i was horrified by this experience and soon told my mother. the same cyst errupted again, and my mom took me to a dr who referred me to the hospital where i had it drained. this was very painful and took a long time to heal as they did not remove the packing which was causing the pain. months later i had another, on the same side. i did not waste time, my mom insisted that i have the whole gland removed, especially as i was about to start university, i could not afford to take time out due to reocurring cysts. the procedure was fine, i felt much better than the first time. it was such a relief to wake up and not feel that awful pain. i had hardly any bleeding and the swelling reduced over two weeks. it has been 8 years and i am so upset to know that i am developing another, i think that it is the opposite side now, but it does not feel as painful. i hoope it will resolve itself as i have just started a new job and cannot take time off just yet. i wish there could be some feed back from gynae dr's!

i have suffered with this condition for at least 15 years and have just come out of hospital for the second time in a month having a marsupilsation again. Like everyone else on the site I am sick to the back teeth of not being able to discover what causes these cysts and how to stop them recurring -- my GP and the hospital have never mentioned the removal of the gland and I will be speaking to my doctor anout this possibility. I am currently in great pain as when they stitched me up at the hospital they stitched the labia as well and it is excritiating when I go to the toilet. They also attempted a smear test after they had stitched me which was exceptionally painful. Anyone wishing to contact me re this problem can do so at hg009b3312@blueyonder.co.uk

Q: Are the occurance of the cyst related to sexual activity.
Mine are and occur after having sex two or three days in a row.

Q: What relationship do the occurance of the cysts have to the menstural cycle.
Mine have occured within 10 days of the period starting.

Q: What scientific literature exists regading bartholins cysts and where can i acess this. Also what is this regading the relationship of stress to bartholins cyst that people have eluded to.

Q: Do people getting the cysts have particularly moist vaginas, I do and am wondering if this may be a contributing factor.

Just wanted to let some of you know that there is a spray called "Dermoplast" that comes with an antibacterial agent in it that will help some of the discomfort of using the toilet after these procedures. It has 20% Benzocaine in it, which provides short term numbness and is sold in most drug stores in the US. It was my best friend after tearing while giving birth to my first child and after a recent vulvar biopsy. Now I am getting ready to have another rather large biopsy with removal of bartholin's cyst in a few days and I won't leave home without it!!

The more I read on this site, the more scared I become. I haven't ever been able to find out anything about what was causing me so much pain. Last year I suffered on and off for two months until finally I couldn't sit, stand, or walk. The next day held a visit to the local emergency room where I had my cyst lanced. Being totally honest, I was in labor twenty three hours with my son but this pain was worse than what I experienced in those twenty three hours.

Now a year later I"m going going to my gyn. The cyst has came back several times but has always drained on its own. This time I've noticed it is draining more and is colored. I'm scared. I'm a single mom so this is overwhelming to me.

I'm excited to be getting this taken care of. I talked to an aunt of mine and she has had this problem. It is even a reoccuring problem for her.

I was not sexually active for many years when this problem came about. I'm very clean but I feel that the drainage smells badly.

Now I'm seeing someone and I feel very embarrised about this.

I'm going to leave my email address and I hope to hear from someone. Maybe with more information or just some encouragement.

I too had the cyst removed. It has been 10 days and still in pain. Went to the E.R. told there was an infection. Went back to the gyno doc who performed the surgery said no infection. I am so scared. I don't know who to believe or want anyone else to touch or examine me. Instincts say take the antibodics. I am my best doctor. Insurance says wont cover for a second opionion. Swollen, puss and blood and a bottle of Percodan which does nothing but make me feel out of it. Now I feel relieved to have read what you all have said. Sadly, very sadly my family is giving me descipline, not suppoirt. I need support not descipline right now, thank you very much.

I am 21 years old and my reoccurences with this bartholins cyst is ruining my life. I had my first one come up about a year ago and have had three since then. The third time I got a shot and it burst on its on. My gyno advised me to get "marsupulization" which is supposed to end my worries, however from the recent post that may not happen. Has anyone has a successfull marsupilization? I need some good news. my email is hunyluvlee@aol.com

As I am a professional web surfer I dug up a few sites on the topic. This seems to be the most informative. I hope it is helpful to the many ladies I see here that are suffering from this very painful condition.

I just saw my gyno this morning, was told I have a Bartholins cyst, and was given the option to have it removed or not. I have little pain from it at this point, but am scared to death to have surgery. I am also scared as could be after reading about everyone else's experiences.

I have to admit reading these messages scares me to death. I was diagnosed with a Bartholins Cyst on 11/14/2003. Yesterday I started bleeding from my vagina and this scared me since I had a total hysterectomy in March of 1999. Today the GYN I saw in a emergency situation said that he could feel the cyst but really did not know where the blood was coming from and referred me to my GYN. He did tell me that in rare cases this could be cancer. I now wait for a diagnose from another doctor. I am 51 and have never heard of such cyst. Now I am out searching for all the information I can find on how this occurs and why.

Hi Everybody,
I am hoping I am reading the absolute worst case scenarios. I was diagnosed with a Bartholin's Gland Cyst in late 1999 in college. Since, then I have received varied treatment including lancing, word catheters and marsupialization. The cyst seems to grow slowly overtime and bacterial infections tend to appear just about every month. Last night I was given yet another round of antibiotics and referred to my surgeon. I am very hesitant to have the gland removed due to the fact that if it was such an easy procedure and effective they would do it straight off. Not to mention that my doctor refuses to perform the surgery, but is willing to refer me to his partner. I am scared and feel alone. I would love some advice from an expert on these types of cycsts and the success rate of gland removal procedure. Please write me with feedback or a referral to coffeebuglin@yahoo.com
Best of Luck to Everyone, at least we are not alone!!!

Hi, I finally found this site/board which actually acknowledges the sheer agony and upset that sufferers go through.

I have only just been diagnosed with my first infected cyst, (or now abscess). I'm 17, and in complete agony. My GP put me on antibiotics, and i've only taken 2 so far, but I'm praying they'll work. I can't tke this pain much longer, and dread anything surgery related; which will mean me having to tell my mum.

The lump is tight with tension, and I have a dark red patch on it which has developed overnight. I'm wondering if this is signalling that it may need to burst or something. It's so so painful to the touch, and even when it rubs on my clothes it feels like salt being poured on to an open wound :'( I'm not good to be around, because I cant get comfortable, bend down, or even sleep :(
If the antibiotics don't work, I'll go back to the doctors, (I may do before! The pain is becoming hard to bear!) but any suggestions will be gladly welcomed. Baths, and pain killers don't seem to be doing a lot to help : (
Please reply if you have experience of this/can offer guidance.
Many thanks,
Poppy

Question? Anyone have it performed under local anethestic? My Dr is pushing the General but is willing to try Local with General on stand by? Opinions Please? She said an Epidural has too much risk and a Pudendal (sp?) block wouldn't touch the pain. Mine is the size of a golf ball...

My wife had a marsupialization last week so I thought I would add some comments. Don't want her to see this site though coz it is a bit worrying to see the number of cases where it re-occurs. A good site for info is www.eastwoodward.org.uk/your-surgery-minor-batholins.phtml it has info about the cause of it and the procedure. I don't know why this discussion page is in the Ulster Cancer Foundation site because A bartholins is not cancerous. Like most sufferers, my wife had not heard of this malady before, but when she mentioned it to a work colleague she found that her friend had had the same thing. We were surprised when the surgeon advised having a general anaesthetic, because the GP gave us the impression it would be local. Check the link I mention above coz it answers quite a few of the questions I have seen on this site. Sadly, it seems that antibiotics does not often seem to work, unless you are really lucky and find the problem early. Unfortunately, because this problem occurs where it does, sufferers are reluctant to talk about it or , I guess, see the doctor about it until it is already quite a bad & painful problem. I suggest you all try and tell people about this, because the more people that know about this, the more likely it is that women can spot the problem early and mimimise the pain & trauma that they suffer.

Last year(2003) was when I first experienced a bartholin cyst. I honestly thought I was alone. See, the thing is that this is my 6th time in a year that I've had this. And it is really disturbing. I just started working at nordstrom in pleasanton california and I don't have any medical coverage. I am actually at home right now recovering from another flare. and I do have a catheter in my right area. I am so tired mentally, physically, emotionally and Financially. I went to the ER twice this week and my bill is going to be huge since i don't have insurance. I honestly don't know what to do anymore. I think its unfair to me and to my so loving and caring Fiance'. He's had to put up with this for this whole year and I sometimes think that he doesn't deserve this. I love him so much that the only thing I think would work for him is if I let him go. But he's the one person that has been my strength. Hes been my comfort and he's been a great shoulder to lean on. Ladies..... wouldn't you feel the same way too if your body was so tired and you felt like giving up? My whole life has changed. All the money that i work for has gone to my medical bills. And David and I have made so much plans as to getting our own place, raising kids....everything a girl would dream about. I'm just so emotionally drained and i need anyone who could inform me about getting it surgically removed. I need to know if it works coz I don't have the money to get a surgery and then later on down the road get another cyst. My only prayer is that theres a cure and reassurance so we won't all have to go through such pain and grief. any information would be a blessing. (fijiqueen84@hotmail.com) hope to hear from any of you. for now you all take care.

This has been an amazing posting thread on the subject - even if it has nothing to do with cancer. I just got my first bartholins cyst/abcess. My GP referred me to a gyno, and the gyno had my cyst/abcess drained and the Word Catheter installed immediately (under local aenesthesia which was just fine - I didn't feel a thing). I had painkillers in hand before the local completely wore off. I don't see a lot of postings from those who had the catheter installed, but I see a lot of plain drainage and marsupializations mentioned. I've had the catheter a week and while the first day any pressue hurt (urination, defecation, sneezing, sitting, laughing, farting...) after three days, most pains eased up - sitting is still difficult and urination stings, but the rest can be dealt with. I'm down to one painkiller a day (I take one when I get to work) and the bleeding has stopped for the most part, but if the catheter gets disturbed, I still have some spotting. I don't know if this will work in the long term, but recovery has been OK to deal with.
A couple of comments: For the younger girls, do not be afraid to tell your parents. It is more important to get the healthcare that you need, and you will need it. This has nothing to do with being sexually active, and the internet has a number of resources that will back you up if this is your concern. You are in need of medical attention. There are any number of complications that can occur when you neglect your health. Second comment is that you have the right to know what your options are, and those blessed with jobs with insurance may also be entitled to get a second opinion. Most authoritative sites will tell you that plain drainage is not considered effective treatment, and I think this board absolutely reinforces that finding. Third comment: A miserable life is not worth living. Seek professional treatment. Home treatment of something that makes you miserable and reoccurs with regularity merits a trip to the Dr. Given the limited knowledge base of this problem, do not expect your general practitioner to treat this - you will (and should) be referred to a GY/OBN.

Recently had a bartholins abcess, antibiotics did not work to clear up the infection and i had masupialisation under a general anaesthetic. This procedure was not at all painful and recovery was quick (good old N.H.S),although i must add that the pain from the abcess was unbearable,I was unable to sit down or walk. I have never had this problem before and have been told that the chances of recurrence are about 5% wodered if this is hormone related as only had a baby six weeks ago.A cyst is a lump in the vulval region and occurs when the gland becomes blocked,it may or may not be painful. An abcess occurs when the cyst becomes infected,it feels hot to touch and is red and swollen and is extremely painful.

Geez, this site just depressed me! I just had a catheter inserted under general today. It's uncomfortable, but nothing like the pain this Bartholin's Cyst has caused me for 7 days! Has anybody had a catheter and NOT had a reocurrence? I hope...I'm a 40 yr. old who hopes that this cyst does not become the focus of the rest of my life. Any input would be appreciated.

I am a 25 year old who was diagnosied with PCOS late last year. Middle of March this year (2004) I was diagnoised with a Bartholins Cysts. Luckily for me I have private Health care and was taken into a Bupa Hospital where my Dr under general anaesthetic I had a marsupialization. This was done nearly 2 weeks ago, but I still have a slight lump on my right side of my vagina. This I have been told is normal and that after time (and sitting normally, and doing normal things), the lump should disapear. I am currently taking Metformin for PCOS and I have been told to change my eating lifestyle and to exercise more. I am still in slight pain, and tried to have sex with my partner last night. After the initial stinging, sex was fine for only a little while. The pain got slightly unbearable and things had to stop. I have looked up as much as I can, but there is not really a lot of information out there. Will keep searching though and hopefully the lump that I havwe been left with, will start to dissapear.

i had a bartholins abscess drained last night in an operation. my gp said she usually did them in her office but it was too large. i was feeling sick because the infection had gotten into my bloodstream. by the time i got to the hospital and was waiting to be operated on, i was in so much pain i had to have pr(rectal panadol) after the op was such a relief i started to cry. i'm on discharge meds now and taking salt bath 2/3 times a day. my advice is to get checked out straight away and don't wait for it to get worse because i waited 3 days and that was way too long to be in the amount of pain i was in. so at the slightest sign(if it's your first abcsess) ask for help and don't be scared!!!!! trust me there is nothing worse

I had my word catheter removed 2 days ago (it was in for 2 weeks). So far I feel great! (Mine was the size of a softball and hurt clear up into my buttock.)My GYNO said that chance of reoccurance after the catheter is slim, but not impossible. Duricef was an effective antibiotic for this. But, I agree. Don't wait as long as I did and don't be scared.

UK. Despite marsupialisation, the Bartholin's Cyst kept returning (just sitting awkwardly was enough to flare it up. Erythromycin worked every time (wish the docs had tried that one before marsupialisation) but I didn't like to keep taking antibiotics so I switched to alternative medicine.

I put half a cut clove of garlic onto the outside area of the cyst (ladies, if you shave then use a piece of thin gauze so you don't burn yourself). I used sticking plaster to hold it in place for 2 or 3 days. Hey Presto! The lump disappears.

This seems to stop it turning into an abscess and cures it ... until the next time I stretch that particular area by sitting/riding a bike etc. Sex doesn't trigger the cyst to reform provided I'm well lubricated.

I thoroughly recommend the fresh clove of garlic method (the garlic paste internally was very messy and didn't work....)

Sticking plaster is just Elastoplast or something similar. It's only function is to hold the cut garlic clove in place. (half a clove, not half a whole bulb!). Sellotape or sticky tape would work too but would not stick as well and is not as flexible!

Good luck! Let me know how you get on (via this noticeboard) if you can.

When I became pregnant with my 1st child, I developed my first bartholin cyst. During delivery it actually ripped open the cyst cavity clear to the rectum. It never went away and would fill every few weeks and become painful. I lived with this for 4 years. After 3 doctors I found out it had become an abscessed fistula. I had surgery a fistulotomy and it worked. I have more recently started having reoccuring cysts about every few months that rupture on their own but are painful and annoying. But the over the counter Dermaplast does help numb them. I am interested in hearing anyone with a similar experience. E-mail is bethhug4u@juno.com

I have had an infected batrtholin cyst all week and have taken a course of antibiotics which didn't work. In the last 2 days I have used Magnesium Sulphate Paste (used to draw pus from witlows, carbincles, boils, etc). IT WORKS!! The cyst is slowly draining of pus and I think I can avoid lancing or surgery.
Do try this if your cyst is infected. Apply paste to some gauze and apply directly onto infected area. Change 2-4 times a day.
GOOD LUCK!

Hello, I was in extreme pain monday and felt as if there was worms in my anus (sorry so blunt) doctor checked and I was fine. However, I couldnt deal with the pain. (It seemed as if my insides was coming out) Everytime I sat down I felt like I was pushing this golfball up further inside me. Needless to say the second time I went to my doctor he sent me to the gynocologist and they diagnosed me with the bartholins cysts also..HOWEVER, They told me it was not in the expected place they usually are. I was concerned. Anyways, He lanced it and a horrible fowl smell came out, then he put a word catheter there too. He told me that antibiotics wouldnt work for me and I am to go back in 9 days to get it taken out. I am wearing a pad because I'm still draining alot and it smells horrible, does anyone else have that and does that go away? BTW, the reason I felt that way in my anus was it was in very far (not in normal place) and it was putting alot of pressure in front and back of me. I feel alot better except for the smell and slight discomfort of the cathetor but far better now. I will keep you updated and check out the other sites some people have posted. Good luck, and If I find out anymore information on Bartholins Cyst I will let ya'll know. God bless, April

Any advice on nipping this in the bud before it becomes huge? To April right before my entry; yes, the odor and drainage go away....until the next one apparently. Please, advice! April S.

My first bartholins cyst occured 5 months ago (right before Valentines day). They thought it was a gartners duct cyst. It was drained and treated with a catheter. The catheter fell out a week later and I thought that was the end of it. I just turned 20 and got my 2nd bartholin's cyst. I had it drained yesterday and another catheter was put in. I'm on cephalexin but no pain medication. I really wish I was because this time it's more painful than ever! I am really praying for no more recurrences and hoping the same for everyone else. Take care and happy sitz baths.

My first cyst occured when I noticed a painful swelling on one side of my vagina. I took a plane to Puerto Rico, an 8 hour flight from California, and when I got off the plane and went to my hotel, it was unbearable. I couldn't sit, walk, and I was scared. I went to the gyno after it went away and came back and the doctor recommended me not to have surgery. She told me to take sitz baths and such, but then why do I still have it? It's so huge, doesn't hurt, but very uncomfotable when I have sex and when my period comes every month. I mean what is the best thing to do? I'm going to the doctors tomorrow to get this problem fixed but what I've read so far, I'm scared to death. Any recommendations.

After a marsupilization in April 2004; I've had times where the same area starts to swell again. (Usually after an episode of diarrhea). I bought a drawing salve at the pharmacy (Prid drawing salve) and applied this right after a hot shower. After 15 minutes, I GENTLY press the area and it drains scant to moderate amount of blood-tinged drainage. This has been working for me for several months. I'm sure it would not had I not had the marsupilization. Sounds far-fetched; but I know the pain and desperation felt by those of us with this problem.

i've had a marsupialization (local anesthesia!! i DO NOT recommend it! go general!) about 6 weeks ago. the lump underneath my groin is still there but not as sore anymore. still kinda uncomfortable sitting sometimes. after the 2nd week for my follow up, the dr had to reopen the duct by giving me a small local anesthisia again and re-poking the wound open again. it still stings sometimes and intercourse is still very painful (even after 6 weeks!! is this normal?). haven't have a full attempt yet. everytime my partner enters me, it's painful and that's the end of it. i find even when i get aroused, the gland gets a bit harder again. is the gland still there b/c it's scared from the inside? or will this be something that will always be there? i'm really upset and feel that my bf and i are being so jipped! he's a great guy and he's my first bf in 4 years (been celebate for that period of time). and i got it the FIRST TIME i had intercourse w/ him. what bad luck! (the cyst has been tested for STD's and came back negative.)
i am currently taking triphsal (b control pills) and wondered if there is a link?
has anyone had to wait this long to have sex and wait this long for the gland swelling to go down? the procedure was so horrible, that i don't want to go thru another one. is the 2nd one easier or do they get worse? why can't we just take this stupid useless gland out of us if it's not related to our sexual activity?? darn gland! nothing but trouble.

I have had one for a couple of years now and it stayed small and didn't bother me until last week. I had a urinary tract infection and that aggrevated the cyst. It grew to the size of a quarter and became painful (it has not been a bother until now) I stumbled on this web site, because like everyone else, didn't want to deal with it because of the options.

But, after reading through this forum, I combined two of the suggestions for natural remedy last night and did experience substantial relief after three applicatrions. I made a salve using mortar and pestal from epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) and a rather large fresh clove of garlic in a medium of a small amount of glycerin. I applied the salve and packed it with cotton. It stunk, it had a slight burning at first application. It worked. The size has been reduced by about 25% in that short time. Today I am going to the store to try using a pre prepared drawing salve as a comparrison and because I can use that during the day when I don't want to smell like garlic. The garlic is a strong antbacterial, antifungal and it seems like a good thing to incorporate anyway in case there may be some infection in there. (My cyst did not appear to be infected). Tonight I am trying the homemade application again to see how far the size of the cyst can be reduced. Will post the result.

Results were interesting. Garlic really burns, couldn't find a preprepared drawing salve. I continued to make a paste from Magnesium sulfate (epsom salts) and crushed garlic, the cyst came back a little the day I didn;'t apply the paste, then I applied it numerous times on sunday and it broke on sunday (blood mostly). It is gone completely for now. I think the magnesium sulfate had a lot to do with it. Towards the last two or three days it was more painful and looked like a blister or reddish area had formed. Don't know if the paste did it, but I think it did. It was somewhat granular because I could'nt get it to dissolve completely.

Has anyone had one burst and go away for good??? I understand from some of these postings that it is going to come back. Wonder if that is always the case. THe next time it comes back, I am not going to wait so long to do something. For now, I feel like a very lucky person.

Elena-If you were diagnosed with ovarian cancer, you MUST have a hysterectomy now. Ovarian CA is a fast growing, dangerous form of CA. My cousin just went through surgury and chemo and is now cancer-free. As a sufferer of Bartholin's cysts, I am concerned about the corelation of these things and cancer. My OB/GYN assures me that this is no corelation. To the woman that made her own drawing salve- I used Prid drawing salve. WalMart had it, but it was behind the pharm. counter. I'm going to try your remedy and compare. April

Hi Everyone,
I felt a lump when I was washing in the shower on Monday morning. It was uncomfortable, but not unbearable. Two days later, I visited the doctor to see what could be done. It had become difficult for me to initially sit or stand, and since I also had a cold, coughing was a nightmare because it pulled on the area. It felt as if a clip had been put on the most tender part of my body and could not be released.
My sister had been diagnosed with Bartholin's back in October (nine months ago), so I was more confident than most of the previous posters. She told me all about it, I read what was available, and was able to talk to the doctor without freaking out. The doctor (OB-GYN) informed me that mine was not infected, and recommended Cephalexin-500mg 4x daily and 4 sitz baths per day. Thank God I was working as a receptionist and could literally sit all day; I filled small ziplock bags with ice cubes (covered with a paper towel) and placed it inside my panties for instant relief. It also felt much better when I sat on a heating pad. The heat flows to the area, providing relief, but gets too hot after about 15 minutes. I recommend alternating ice and heat, but for me, the ice works better. I feel like I am rambling, but I want to help as much as I can.
My body is used to being rubbed down with lotion (body butter) after showering, and with this cyst, I am afraid to use anything in that area. I've found that the water from sitz baths is making me feel very dry down there, so I apply vaseline (petroleum jelly) with a cotton ball. This provides some relief, especially before adding ice.
It is now Saturday, and I've visited a doctor in Urgent Care. I thought that I'd go in to see if it is infected yet. The information that I've been reading online said that if it's painful, it's infected. This is not true, according to the doctor. She says that mine is very hard, and when it becomes squishy to the touch, it is infected. I have been given Tylenol 3 with Codeine to take 4x per day for pain. I am hoping it works because I am afraid of being too physical and hurting myself. All I want to do is clean my room, vacuum and do my hair, but I cannot stand the pain. I have been in the bed practically all day. It hurts getting in and out of the car.
Be sure to use anti-bacterial soap and avoid body washes for that area. My mother, who developed something similar around her rectum attributes it to the body wash. She has not had a problem since discontinuing use. Back to my sister, she did not have sex again for three months after hers cleared up. Also, it makes dealing with this ten times easier if you purchase a sitz bath tub, instead of using a real bath tub. I was getting burned out and using up all of my cleaning products to sanitize the bath tub before sitz baths. Sitz tubs are at drug stores and cost about $14. It is sooooo worth it because you can get the water hot enough and it is going straight to the pain. It fits perfectly over the toilet seat (make sure you pull it up the way men use it). Wear comfortable clothes when you can, like sweats. For work, wear skirts for easy access.
Never be afraid to talk about it! I am 29 years old, and it's my first cyst. I've cried several times, but I am strong, pray often, and know my body well. Thank God for giving you this because for whatever reason, you have been chosen to have it, and maybe it will serve you in some way. Trust your instincts, and do not always believe doctors. Ask questions! For example, have you performed this surgery before? Tell them what you do not want. For example, my sister does NOT recommend the catheter. Hers was packed with gauze to soak up the infection, removed, packed again, and removed. She has not had one since, thank God.
I truly believe that I have a hormonal imbalance. My history is I had been sexually active for about four months prior to getting the cyst with one partner. During that time, I have had very irregular periods; for one cycle, I did not have a period for nearly two months. Also, today I finished my second pack of birth control pills. My period was so light last month, I did not need to use maxi pads. I had a couple of streaks in a panty liner for about three days. Prior to my sexual activity, I had been celibate for four years (by choice). My partner noticed that I am always well-lubricated (ready for sex). He loves it, but now I am wondering if this and other factors are leading to this problem. I do not remember being so lubed in the years I had sex before my celibacy. I advise you ladies to do what's best for you. I personally, have no intention of having sex again until I get a handle on this. Do not be pressured into having sex too soon, no matter what! You must be in control! Please email me and let me know if I have helped or if you have suggestions for me. I have been online reading all day, and very saddened and alarmed by what women are writing here.
God bless and take care of you!

Hi, Ive been dealing with Bartholins Cysts for about 6 months now. I noticed a lump in the shower on a Monday morning and by Wednesday I was in ER getting it drained. They didnt use a cafiter they just filled me up with gauze that i was to pull out the next day and put me on antiobtics. The procedure was very painful. The most painful part is when they give you local anistetic and they pierce the the inflamed area with the needle. after it is frozen the pain is okay to deal with. I couldnt walk properly for the next week and took the whole week off work while doing sitz bath constantly to ease the pain. 2 weeks later it came back, this time they used the cafeter and blew me up down there. The cafeter broke 2 weeks later. and within 2 weeks after that I was back in the hospital gettin it drained. Since the last drainage my cycst hasnt blown up to full size but it constantly feels like i have pulled a muscle in my groin or butt because im in constant pain, with this constant ache. I am thinking about going to my doctor and gettin a physical and talk to her about gettin this gland removed fully. I have not had sex in over 4 months, even oral sex to me seems awkward since I dont want it to get infected from the saliva. I feel this is wrecking my sex life, my work life, and now my whole life. This is the scariest thing that has ever happened to me in my life!

Hallelujah!
My mom suggested I add vinegar to my salt and water sitz baths. The next evening, it burst on its own. I didn't even feel it, but there was a load of pus and blood in my panties. Continuing the sitz baths until my doctor appointment tomorrow. Hopefully, all will go well. I feel 100% better, as the pressure is released! Thank you, God!!

When my cyst was drained four months ago, my doctor used the Word catherter. Fortunately, I saw the Dr. before it got infected. I'm no hypochondriac, but certain things merit immediate medical attention. When I got my cyst, it came on fast, was fairly large, made sitting uncomfortable and sex impossible. There is no reason to live like that! I've had no reoccurance yet, which I would like to believe is because I did not waste time to "see if it would go away." The catheter was in just over 2 weeks. The Dr. was going to let it fall out on its own, but removed it when I told her my period was about to start. The first period was not comfortable at all, but they have gotten better each month. They are still worse than before the cyst. I start feeling very run down in the PMS period and I never got that before. The actual period itself is pretty much the same, but I've switched to OB tampons because I find the applicators irritating to the surgical area sometimes.
I resumed sex after 37 days (my husband counted!) and it was not comfortable at all at first. Pretty much limited myself to "quickies" and only two/three times a week for the first month after we started back up again. It took about another two months to get back into a regular sexual routine. I still have some tenderness. It is much easier if he wears a condom, which he fortunately does not complain about - he's interested in what works best.
I never took antibiotics, and only took pain pills for the two days following the drainage. Overall, I'm pleased with the results I got with the catheter.

Had a cyst the size of a walnut for 14 years with no problem. The gyno explained it to me & told me to keep an eye on it & although it was strange to have a lump, it gave me no pain/problems.

For no apparent reason it became infected. You will know if this happens to you as it is very painful, hot to the touch and tripled in size going all the way back to put pressure on the rectum. I waited 3 days & went to the ER - MISTAKE! The Dr. there put in a catheter which tore out the next morning when I had a b.m.. Very painful! My gyno said the first catheter was in the wrong place and not inflated enough to hold. (Make sure you go to a gyno!) He stitched up the hole from the first one put another one in & I left it in place for 2 weeks. It was uncomfortable and took a week to resume regular activities. You are supposed to tuck the end of the catheter up in the vagina to get it out of the way but that pulled on the incision so I had that lovely tube hanging out for the entire time. The catheter was out for only 2 weeks and the cyst came back. It's bigger than before, but still not painful. I'm nervous that it will become infected again.

Has anyone had theirs removed? How does it heal? What kind of recovery time?

Good luck and hugs to everyone dealing with this problem!

Ive had 3 Bartholins abscesses, 2 of which were in last 3 months requiring marsupilization.
So far the doctor has not really answered my questions.

Is it stress related?
Is it related to sweating during exercise? ( I always shower immediately afterwards)
Is it hereditary?

Can I help prevent another recurrence?

Anyone with answers??

I've been diagnosed w/ a Bartholin cyst about a year ago. It was the size of a walnut and it wasn't bothersome or painful. Since that time i've been doing warm compresses which helped in the reduction of its size. But about a week ago after "rough sex" with my bf it suddenly increased in size and got quite painful. 3 days after that it had turned into an abscess and I had to go to the ER because it had swelled so big that i couldn't even close my legs!! It also happened so sudden just with a sudden sharp pain "down there". It was painful and i could hardly walk. I thought it had ruptured but nothing was coming out. I had an incision and drainage of the abscess and it's been one week so far. The first few days were very painful but now the swelling has gone done a bit and i don't feel the pain. My question is: Has anyone experienced this? And how long does it take for the swelling to completely go down? I'm so lost and scared. Please reply and Thanks so much!

Hi I'm back on this forum and experiencing my 4th bartholins cyst. The first two were drained and word catheters were inserted afterward. The catheters fell out about 5 days later although they were supposed to stay in for 6 weeks each. I went back to my gyno for a follow up appointment and she said we'll just have to hope it doesn't come back! The next time i had one, which was a only a week later, I couldn't get my normal gyno and had to go to a man gynocologist (dire circumstances require male gynos). He basically left the decision up to me, whether I wanted him to drain it, leave it, or marsupialize it. I thought "Hey you are the doctor!!! You tell me whats best!!!!!!!!!" I've never had a marsupialization and he kept saying he COULD do it in his office but it would be extremely painful. Then he said that the skin was not healed enough to insert another word catheter because the other one had just fallen out the day before. Eventually he just sent me home still in pain. Luckily it popped that night on its own! I now have my fourth cyst and am supposed to go on vacation to visit my boyfriend ...I have 3 days to get rid of this and I want it to pop naturally. I think I will try the garlic method as well as the vinegar in the sitz bath. However, could anyone thats had their whole gland removed give me some information on that procedure? I'm sick of living with these cysts and from the testimonials on this site, it looks like they still recur even after marsupialization. Thanks a lot.

UK. Firstly, to the lady with Ovarian cancer/cervical precancer - HAVE THE OPERATION otherwise you won't even see your first child grow up. A friend of mine has just died cos she didn't. Good luck - I'm thinking of you.

Secondly, generally, Bartholin's Cysts seem to pop up for no particular reason though rough/unlubricated (cos the woman isn't ready) sex can certainly trigger them. Apparently nuns get them too.

Once you've had one and had it treated, avoid stretching that area for at least 2 months to give it time to fully heal.

A Bartholins abcess is exceedingly painful, a Bartholin's cyst isn't necessarily so unless it's so huge that it puts pressure on everything.

I still recommend the garlic method (as below) - it certainly worked for me and I haven't had a recurrence for over a year now.

Hey Presto! My lump disappears.

This seems to stop it turning into an abscess and cures it ... until the next time I stretch that particular area by sitting/riding a bike etc. Sex after a couple of months healing doesn't trigger the cyst to reform provided I'm well lubricated.

I thoroughly recommend the fresh clove of garlic method (the garlic paste internally was very messy and didn't work....)

OK, this is kind of gross. 2 wks after the catheter was removed, the lump came back. It was tender, but not painful. During a hot shower, I gently (but firmly) applied pressure to the lump and felt this weird tickley feeling. The cyst had completely drained! Every time that I feel swelling, I do this and "presto" it's gone!

went to my gyno with awful pain and lump in my vagina. She said it was a Bartholin's cyst and she lanced it in her office. It apparently was not infected and just a lot of blood came out. Told me to take sitz baths every hour that day and at least four more sitz baths the following day. On day three, I went back to her still with discomfort and she lanced it again because the incision had closed and it wasn't draining. If it comes back she wants to do marsupilization in hospital. Why was there only blood in this lump? It apparently was not infected yet it closed after the lancing. Any doctors out there to give some input on this?

Hi I was diagnosed with a Bartholins cyst about 8 months ago, at the time it was very small and a bit like a sac, about 10 months previous to this it had swelled to the size of a plum and i thought it was a boil and due to not being able to get an appointment with my doctor i had a go at popping it myself which appeared to be successful. It has swelled a little on and off and on a routine smear test I asked my doctor about it and she diagnosed it,she said it was probably caused by an ingrowing hair and that i could live with it or have a procedure performed being a complete baby and very scared of hospitals i asked wetherv it would be under local or general which she did not know but would find out.About a week ago the swelling reappeared and has grown to the size of a plum I have tried squeezing it which is agony and it drains off a foul smelling pus. my pelvic area and groin are very tender and sitting or infact any position which puts pressure on it is excrutiating.Sex is out of the question and i feel very tearful and not very nice to be around i am paranoid about smelling and cant get the fear of it being cancer related too, this is all obviously having a knock on effect to my husband and children. It has been good to hear of fellow sufferers but has increased my fear of any surgery also and the thought of going through what some of you ladies have for the damn thing to recur is very very scary.I send my best wishes to you all and hope you are all recovering or at least pain free and would be grateful for any feedback

Hey Girls,

Please do not be too worried, I have had a cyst for over 5 years, it does not trouble me and my partner and I forget that it is there, even though it is about 3 cms. I had it lanced once but it came back so now we are buddies, if it flares up I willg o to the doctor but as it is not doing anything at the moment I will leave it. Have a look at the following web site http://b4.boards2go.com/boards/board.cgi?user=catelee2u this is all about Bartolins Cysts, good luck ladies,

Hi There,
I am now 55yr. and I first had trouble with my Bartholin gland when I was 30weeks pregant with my 3rd baby. Had marsupilization and was never sure if it healed well as could not see over my bump but still tender. After giving birth had stitches and just kept things under control with hot bathes after sex. All worked well for a short time then the swelling never went away even with all the bathes I was having ( looked like a prune).Never knew I could have marsupilization again so put up with things, then on a visit to my gyno a few months back he said he could do it again. Had it done 5 weeks ago and still got a BIG hole and tissue hard on that side.Going back to hospital in another 3 weeks so will ask them if this is normal or will I be left with "2 vaginas" now. Did try sex but was uncomfortable and ached a lot on that side. No one at hospital told me any follow up advise just keep it clean and dry and dont ride a bike ( as if ) so is there any one out there been left with a hole or does it get smaller ( I hope) Joan

My gyne first noticed a half a pea sized cyst just after the birth of my second child(2yrs ago) & said that it was nothing to worry about. Then after a recent check up my gp said it was a Bartholin cyst & was the size of a golfball. It has never given me any pain whatsoever. So I was rather surprised when my Doc said that it was so large & suggested that I have a Marsup done. I reluctantly agreed as he said that if it did get infected that I would be in agony. so one week ago I had the marsup under general anesthetic in hospital. The procedure really was not too bad at all. Obviously its sore to sit for a couple of days but its certainly bearable. Those women out there who have experienced episeotomys through childbirth like I did (twice) may relate to the discomfort.
Like I said its now been 7 days and am a little concerned as I feel pressure on the wound site. It feels as though the cyst although smaller has stopped draining & has gone hard causing some discomfort & pressure. Can anyone else relate to this. Is this normal? I hoped to be free of discomfort by now.

Im now on my 13th so trust me, ive become an old hand! All by the age of 21!!
Im now on the constant low dose of anti b's so lets all hope it works.

Hello all - After reading through all these messages, I have to say I'm so sorry that many of you have experienced such pain but relieved too that I'm not on my own. I had my first bartholins a year ago. It had developed into an absess and was the most excruciating pain I had ever felt. Ever! My gyni lanced it for me. He had suggested a marsupialisation, but having a completely irrational fear of general anaesthesia, I declined. I had a recurrence in March of this year but after a short course of antibiotics it disappeared. And now it's back again! It's largish but not particularly painful. He again suggested a marsupialisation as a preventative measure. I did consider it this time but I'm moving country in 4 weeks and my wedding's coming up just after and I don't want to be laid up during all this. I've chosen the antibiotic route again for now. If it doesn't get bigger is it safe to just leave it alone? I'm worried I've made the wrong choice and should have had the surgery. Is it still an option? Would I heal in time to move country and all that?? Any advice?

I had one Bartholins cyst when I was about 22. It was very painful. I had it marsupialized under general anesthesia. it was not a difficult recovery and actually felt much much better than the cyst had. I was free from trouble for about 10 years. I had a brief recurrance then but it "resolved itself." Anyway, I felt at the time that the marsupialization sort of kept the opening bigger and allowed for it to drain on its own. I recently have developed a new one. I can't seem to find advice, but feel that stimulation and lubrication encourage resolution. So, like the last one, I take warm baths and have sex, preferrably intercourse, immediately after and take another warm bath. I know it doesn't sound very sexy, but i swear it helps. Although mine has recurred, it has not been very frequent and has resolved with relatively little pain.

I had my last bartholins cyst in 2002, after having a series of them earlier. I went to the hospital and had the gland removed under general anaesthesia. I remember very well the gynae telling me that the problem is over and that I was not to suffer from it ever again. I have been reading your experiences and shudder at the fact that the "thing" might re-occur!!! Is there away this can be prevented?? After my operation, I was on medication (antibiotics) for 7 days then I stopped and having been leading a normal life since then.

I am having a bartholin cyst removed on Wed. I have had it for about 8 months and the Dr. sent me for a CT scan. The results are that it gives the appearance of a bartholin cyst although it is not in the exact area where they normally are. It is 5cm long by 3cm wide by 1 cm thick. Just wondering how long the recovery period is. I forgot to ask my Dr.

Well ladies, I said I'd keep you posted on my bartholin gland excision. I am in day two of recovery and I must say it's not too bad. The worse part was getting sick from anesthesia. As far as the pain level, well i'm not in as much pain as having the lancing and word cath. I am bruised and swollen but you have to expect that after any surgery. Now, the question is.....will I still have problems without the gland?! That remains to be seen. Will keep you posted.

I think my cyst might be coming back. I've noticed a little bump deep under the skin. It doesn't hurt or bother me at all.
My question is: Should i do another surgery (eg. Marsupulization) or should i just keep a watchful eye on it?
Second question: Is there any way to target Bartholin cysts that are deep under the skin? I read so many of these messages and i can't help but wonder where other ppl's cyst are located. (eg. on the surface or deep under)

I would think that without the gland; you shouldn't have any trouble. Please keep us posted! Mine keeps "puffing up"; but does finally drain. I guess the word cath. does keep an opening larger than the duct. Mine is deep under the skin and very hard. It also is kind of toward the back. Whenever I have to strain to go to the bathroom; it seems that it swells larger! Am I the only one that has noticed this?

hi all, can i just say that im glad im not alone!! ive been suffering with these cysts since i had my first child and that was 14yrs ago. Ive lost count how many times ive been to a&e due to them. Most of the time with mine, they become infected which normally leave me feeling generally unwell. My GP has suggested it may be a blood related disorder, but ive come to discover that at least 4 other family members suffer with them as well which may lead us to think its maybe something in the genes. I read above about the magnesium sulphate paste, ive found if i use it and put some gauze over it, it sometimes helps and on other occassions it doesnt! My partner isnt the most understanding when it comes to these cysts nor is some of my friends and i so wish somedays they could just feel the pain of what its like! ive tried changing my diet, dropping sugar(suggested by GP) and nothing seems to stop them, so if anyone out there has any other idea's id be truly thankfull as 14yrs down the line im kinda giving up on them ever stopping.

To the woman who had the complete excision, please keep posting - I know I am curious about how well this works for the future.
I'm now 7 months post cyst (Word Catheter) withoug recurrance, which seems to be unusal judging by the posts, but not 100% back to normal either - sex is still easier with a condom - and I love my husband so much for putting up with this. My greatest fear is having another one of these. I want to know all my options should it reoccur, and this is the first account I have seen about extraction. I've seen a lot about drainage, some about marsupialization, not so much about catheterization. I post occasionally about my post catheter expereince and hope that it helps those who are considering treatment options.

I didn't know this at the time, but apparently cycling can aggrivate the condition. I used to be an avid cyclist - putting in 30 miles a day on the weekends was an easy ride for me. It isn't worth the risk of reoccurance to me, so I have given up the big miles and only do recreational rides anymore. I've taken up running to stay in shape, but I hate it.
Good luck to all. No one should suffer like we do with these things.

I am having marsupilization on Friday morning and after reading your messages seem a bit nervous. I haven't had any really bad problems with my bartholin cyst. The worst has been the drainage and foul odor which is not that strong.I have opted for an epidural and thought I would be in and out... hope it still works out that way, I have my pre-op on Wednesday and am planning to ask questions galore!!!! Anyone out there please respond... Scared!!!!

i had an excision on 5th july, my consultant is an oncology professor? And he was the only person i was told could perform the op.
3 months on it still hurts, the pain has just moved internally. Am still expereinced all the same problems i.e flares ups before and during periods, only diff. now is its the scar tissue that swells and hardens and there's no puss or blood discharge as it drains itself. i have tried to discuss this with my consultant, but he said this is apparently normal!!! Normal how?, for a start it has taken me nearly 3 yrs to get this op approved, he has only ever performed 2 similar ops in his career an none of the nursing staff in the hospital that was treating me has ever dealt with a patient undergoing the same procedure, so normal by whose standards? Anyway, my post op consultation is on the 23rd of this month so ill post a msg again then with an update. In the meantime i am become quite literally depressed becasue i feel that i have gone through the most excruciating operation ever for no positives and no-one wants to help support or advise and the only people who do advise are worringly cancer specialists who, even in cases of vulva cancer- the official term- there is only something similar the .5% of all reported cases of cancer in women being in the vulva, so generally, we are the research projects and lab reports of the future, and because we are such a minority no-one really cares enough to actually do some real research and get real results. On that positive note ill leave you all.

I'm 26 years old and had my first bartholin's cyst a month ago. I had no idea what was happening at first but was in increasingly excruciating pain over the period of a week. I finally went in to my college health office and was referred to an outside gynecologist and she said the cyst had become infected and was approx. the size of a softball. She incised and drained it the following day under local anesthesia. I was tested for STDS, which the G said sometimes causes them. My tests came back clean. I had just recently broken up with my bf of six years and had been sexually active on a regular basis. The past two months I have not had sex and now today discovered a reoccurance of the beginnings of another cyst. The pain is bearable as the cyst is very small at this point. My G had warned that it might come back and said at that point she would reccommend a minor surgery under general anesthesia to remove it and sew a flap of skin over it to prevent reoccurance. After reading all your messages, I am very concerned that this is the beginning of a long battle with these cysts. Would it be beneficial for me to have a marsupialization this time to possibly give me a greater chance that they will go away for good? Is the surgery painful, recovery, expensive (college student without med insurance)? What about complete removal of the gland? Is sex possible, uncomfortable? Does it affect chances of having children in the future? I going to try to visit my doctor tommorow and get some answers (not that I will) but anything is appreciated as I am very scared and very worried. Thank you to all who posted messages of possible salve reliefs...I will be trying after this message. Any comments, care would be greatly appreciated.

im in college and i noticed a lump on the left side of my vaginal opening earlier this week and went to the health center to see a gyno who told me i had a bartholins cyst. ive read all these postings and am a little scared. ive been compulsively taking baths all throughout the two days that ive been diagnosed but it doesnt seem to be doing any good. will this just rupture on its own at some point? also, is it okay to have sex? will that cause it to get more infected? can i do it unless it hurts? also, is bad to actually apply pressure to it in the shower to actually get it to burst? any suggestions greatly appreciated.. i just want it to go away!

Just discovered my first at age 43... will have a marsup tomorrow... am terrified...should I have the marsup or the complete gland removed at my age? I have no kids... I discovered this on Friday, went to my doc on Monday who just confirmed what I already knew and scheduled me for a marsup on Thursday... what do I do? Do I go under general or local anesthesia? The pain has decreased substantially as well as the size of the abscess... I have a slight discharge... the abscess has "stabilized" it got smaller not larger than a walnut...Help...please mail at annapad2004@yahoo.com

To anyone who has a bartholins cyst - please get the gland removed before it is too late! I am 20 and discovered a small pea size lump after about 7 months it began to grow until i could no longer walk. My GP prescribed countless amounts of antibiotics until i was ill will the pills. I finally admitted myself into A and E and the doctors were horrified my GP allowed it to go on so long. I read up on the symptoms myself because my doc had no idea what it was. I was put under general anesthetic so felt no pain, however they did 'pack' the area and it was the most painful experience getting the pack removed - HOWEVER very worth it to feel normal again. I was in pain for around 2 months and it took around 1 year for the scar to form properly. I have now discovered a small lump on the other side and i know its the same thing again so i have an appointment for doc in 2 days and i will be straight into hospital to have the other one removed while its still small enough to recover quickly - no pills or fuss - just removed. The scar is tiny and sex is no problem so dont hesitate to admit yourself because unless they have experienced it, doctors do not know how painful it can be. Also after reading up on it, research has shown that if you have had it on one side you are very likely to experience it on the other.

HI LADIES I just want to clear a few things up, first of all I have been succesfully cyst free for 2 months after my 3rd battle. A few ladies are getting confused about Marsipulisation and Removal of Gland. Marsipulisation and Removal of the gland is one in the same. THEY NEVER REMOVE THE GLAND! if a doctor says that to you its just so you understand better... what the doctor does is open up the gland, cuts the cyst open, drains it.. and then stitches the cyst wall to the gland. THEY CANT REMOVE THE GLAND.. it is attached to other body parts... this is why women wonder why it comes back after Marsipulisation! WHICH I RECOMMEND ASAP! BTW... healing takes about a year for the scar tissue to go away it will remain hard and uncomfortable for a while..TAKE CARE
