VOTE NOW for SMOKE FREE WORKPLACES in NI. 2/9/2005 to 3/25/2005

700 workers die every year form breathing other people's tobacco smoke. Pen your support for Smoke-free Workplaces - Respond to the DHSSPS consultation today.
The Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety (DHSSPS) has issued a new twenty-year strategy for health and well-being, 'A Healthier Future'. Reducing smoking is identified as a key element in improving the health of the people of Northern Ireland. Question 5 outlines the Minister's three possible options on how to tackle this problem.
Option 5.a is to maintain the status quo. This would continue to see thousands of local employees subjected to carcinogens from other people's tobacco smoke.
Option 5.b would introduce policies in some workplaces, while failing to protect workers in the hospitality industry from unnecessary risks of cancer and heart disease.
We believe that these exemptions cannot be justified on health and safety grounds, as they would significantly undermine the purpose of the legislation, and in particular would sharply reduce the impact of the legislation on health inequalities.
Option 5.c states:
'Legislation should be introduced to ban smoking in all enclosed public places and workplaces'
Option 5.c is clearly the only acceptable way to protect all employees equally. Your support of smoke-free workplaces is vital to the health of the people of Northern Ireland. It is ludicrous that the bar staff, who are exposed to much more smoke than other employees, should continue to be exposed while others enjoy protection from health and safety legislation. Many of our hospitality workers are low paid, un-unionised and work long hours in smoke-filled rooms. Research carried out by the Ulster Cancer Foundation showed that 95% of bar/restaurant staff including a majority of smoking staff, felt that all hospitality staff should be able to work in a smoke-free environment. We all have a duty to protect local employees health.
Please respond to the Regional Strategy Consultation and express your preference for Option 5.c .

We will not achieve smokefree workplaces unless you demand it. The success of this campaign depends on the support of you, your family, friends, colleagues, networks and community.
Thank you for your support and if we can help you in any further way, please let us know.

Why are prisons exempt? All prison officers will be subject to second hand smoke as prisoners can smoke throughout the prison.

We hope UCFs campaign for smokefree workplaces will lead to legislation for all workplaces in NI. At this point some exemptions may be included eg. prisons which may be recognised as a persons home. This happened in the Republic of Ireland. However an exemption does not mean that the workplace cannot be smokefree.

Hello, I am a Chronic Asthmatic. therefore I very much welcome the move to make Northern Ireland a smoke free Country. I love going out for a meal and a few drinks, however I find it almost impossible at the moment, Therefore this move is a step in the right direction.
